Around Town
Rare Supercell Spins Over Crozet - On May 15, a storm chaser captured a rare supercell rotating over Crozet - a striking sight. Supercells are powerful thunderstorms with a rotating core and are known for producing extreme weather. This three-minute video shows the storm's dramatic structure unfolding over the Blue Ridge. Go to the two minute mark if you don’t have time for the full three minutes.

Cyberattack Disrupts Some County Services - Albemarle County is dealing with a cybersecurity incident that’s knocked some systems offline since at least June 12th. Emergency services like 911 are still running, but internet at County buildings is down, and some public services may be temporarily unavailable. It’s not yet clear if this was a ransomware attack or a data breach. The County’s IT team and outside experts are investigating, and law enforcement has been notified. More updates to come.

Crozet Teen Triumphs in State Civics Bee - Crozet’s own Neil Handa, a student at Henley Middle School, clinched first place at the Virginia State Finals of the National Civics Bee held in Williamsburg on June 7. Neil now advances to the national competition in Washington, D.C. this November.

Demolition Begins at Former Green Olive Tree/Laundromat Site - A familiar Crozet site is transforming. Demolition has officially begun at the former Green Olive Tree and laundromat building on Route 240 across from Starr Hill. In its place, plans call for a new 23,120-square-foot, two-story building with a mix of office and restaurant space. Parking will be located behind the structure to support the future tenants.
This project marks another step in the ongoing evolution of Crozet’s prominent entrance corridor—an area that continues to draw investment and reshape how residents and visitors experience the heart of town.
