Local Housing Lobby Earns National Recognition – Albemarle County’s own local housing lobby will be inducted into the national “Public Relations Hall of Fame” in a ceremony to be held on April 1st in New York City. The award follows years of work by the lobby to brand itself a champion of affordable housing in the midst of its self-created housing shortage.
“We are deeply honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Phil McCoffers, Chief Marketing Officer for Albemarle County’s local housing lobby which currently maintains a strategic stockpile of over 10,000 unbuilt homes.

“Solving the housing crisis isn’t rocket science, its Economics 101. To lower housing prices, we need to dramatically increase the supply of our unbuilt homes. Why is that so hard for some folks to understand?”
The local housing lobby will become just the second organization ever inducted into the Public Relations Hall of Fame, joining DeBeers, the international diamond company.
A DeBeers spokesperson heaped praise on the lobby’s ongoing “anti-NIMBY” campaign which has successfully cast local residents as the eternal enemy of affordable housing advocates.

“It’s taken DeBeers over a century to convince people that diamonds are scarce even though our mines are overflowing with them. The Albemarle housing lobby has achieved the same effect in a fraction of the time. And to top it off, they’ve even convinced local activist groups to blame their neighbors and local officials for the problem. It’s a public relations masterpiece.”
Local homebuilders also cheered the announcement, noting the lobby’s ability to maintain a "reality distortion field" among residents across the county.
“I mean, it’s just common sense: we’ll never let housing supply exceed demand. We simply won't hammer a nail when housing prices are falling,” said one developer. “What Phil has done in Albemarle is genius. He’s convinced citizens and local officials that if they just give us enough land, money, and approvals for new developments, we’ll eventually flood the market and lower our sales prices. They actually believe it.”
At the time this story went to press, local Supervisors are evaluating whether dedicating several million more dollars to affordable housing initiatives will help increase the lobby’s existing stockpile of 10,000 unbuilt homes. Some also support another proposal to allow new housing developments in the County’s protected rural area, so that the housing lobby could create an entirely new backlog of unbuilt unaffordable homes there too.
In a related upcoming meeting, Supervisors will focus on how to spend an unexpected $7M windfall from the current year’s budget surplus before turning their attention to the tough decisions necessary to close a $7M funding gap in next year’s budget.
This story is a parody…mostly. 😉 Happy April Fool’s Day!

Trivia
After rowdy crowds damaged the landscaping at the U.S. Capitol, Congress actually passed a law in 1876 banning children from rolling Easter eggs on the grounds. Which U.S. President saved the tradition by moving the party to the White House in 1878? |
