Albemarle County Delayed Public Notice of Ransomware Attack - A ransomware attack on Albemarle County systems began on June 10 and was discovered the following morning but Albemarle County officials waited nearly a month before informing the public, issuing a press release on July 10.
During that delay, county staff, employees, and residents potentially affected weren’t aware they needed to safeguard their personal data (information possibly including names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, driver’s license info, and sensitive health records). Cybersecurity experts recommend immediate disclosure in such cases so individuals can act quickly to protect themselves.
The county says there’s currently no evidence of misuse, but it’s now offering free credit monitoring through Kroll. Albemarle residents can call (866) 819-9798 to enroll.
